Wedding Photography & Videography faqs

A few things we think you should know

How much does it cost to hire you?

All our prices are on this website, no need to get into that awkward emailing 🙂

Do you offer Laybuy or Payment options?

Of course we do and it can be as flexible as you want it, we just ask that your wedding is paid in full before your wedding day – easy az!

Do you require a deposit?

Yes $400. All bookings are taken on a ‘first come first served’ basis to secure your wedding date with Pretty in White.

When is the balance payable?

The day before your wedding please.

Do you travel for weddings?

Yes… New Zealand is one of the best countries to get married. We are based in Matamata but will travel anywhere in NZ. Travel fees may apply but will be fixed. We have shot weddings throughout all of NZ and we’ve been to Fiji, Rarotonga, UK, California and Ontario, Canada.

Do you offer custom packages for elopement and destination weddings?

All of our packages can be custom-tailored for each wedding. We’re flexible because it’s the only way. Weddings are all so unique so reach out and we’ll make something happen just for you.

When will we get our photos and/or video?

Our aim is to get the editing process completed within 4-6 weeks. We will get some ‘sneak peek’ images to you within 48 hours, fully edited and social media sized. If you book a photo video package, the photos are edited first. Video editing takes longer and this will follow the edited images shortly after.

Who will shoot our wedding and what experience do they have?

The main shooter will always be the business owner Steve May. He has shot over 1000 weddings and has been in the game professionally for over 20 years. He is a master at photos and video. Second shooters are handpicked and we collaborate with other business owners, our team is very tight.

We do not ever use inexperienced shooters. You will not ever see us trawling closed Photography Facebook pages looking for an extra shooter a month out from your wedding.

How many photos will we get in the end?

Somewhere between 500 and 1200 finished photos, but it totally depends on the amount of coverage. We won’t hold any back as long as they’re worth seeing. Our philosophy is just to give you the photos we’d want from our own wedding. It’s that simple.

How would you describe your style?

Hmmm, I’m tempted to say after so many weddings that I can shoot whatever style you want. Our images are candid, honest and photojournalistic with a dash of humor.

We strike a fine balance of being a fly on the wall and being hands on with minimal direction. Here’s why: we love to let moments unfold naturally so that they’re honest and unforced. However, to get intimate/beautiful/emotional shots we like to connect with our couples and their guests on a certain level. That means we’re going to be interacting with you like we are friends at your wedding.

Do you offer videography?

Yes. We have thought long and hard about what to offer alongside the images we capture at your wedding. What would we want from some video content at our own weddings was the question, so we started there.

Firstly, we didn’t want to have an army of photographers and videographers at a wedding. To have typically, 2 photographers and 2 videographers was unacceptable. Weddings are intimate and 4 shooters at a ceremony felt wrong, so could we do it with two? Our sister business in Canada trialed a photo video package for their 2018 season with two professional shooters that could do both photo and video, and flip on the fly what they were doing. It was an instant success and we concentrate on the people at your wedding making an engaging story focused video, often with an entertaining element.

Great guys to work with is it too much??

How many weddings do you shoot in a year?

We limit the number of weddings we shoot to make sure we can focus on you and stay fresh and passionate about what we do. We never do 3 weddings back to back. We’ll be sad if we can’t shoot for you, but we promise to send you details of all our favorite photographer friends if we can’t.

Do you need to be fed at our wedding reception?

It really depends on how long you book us for but if we are booked to cover the evenings events then yes please. We prefer not to be seated (we always get stuck talking cameras with guests, every time) and most venues and caterers will provide a vendor meal or throw us an extra plate from the kitchen.

That being said, most of the team, especially Steve have a sweet tooth so please offer us some cake. Like kids with a sugar rush, you will be amazed at our new lease of energy 😉

Can we have our RAW files?

If you don’t know what a RAW file is, then ignore this question.

This can be a very touchy subject within the industry, its not with us. We produce amazing RAW files as we know what we are doing at capture stage. That being said, what you are paying for is the finished product, we get that, it’s probably the reason you like our work so much. If you want your RAW files then you can have them, we just need an external hard drive within 6 weeks of your wedding.

You will need a compatible program like Adobe Lightroom to view and edit your RAW files.

Copyrights to our pictures, whats the deal?

Gulp, where do we start with this subject. You own your images 100% giving you complete social media control, no shared picture contracts.

We attract a lot of very private couples for this reason and you will not see their images on our website. But we do have some images for you to see on this website and these clients have agreed for us to use these to help promote what we do so passionately. But if you say no to sharing then that means no and we respect that.

What kind of cameras do you use?

Steve and most of the shooters we collaborate with are Canon people. We do have a few loyal to Nikon (how dare they) and one to Sony (who? only kidding). All camera gear must be pro gear and no older than 3 years old.

What kind of video gear do you use?

Similar to the pro photographic gear but at the moment we are using Canon 5D Mark IV bodies and professional audio.

Do you have backup gear?

Never left home without it! Steve has by far the most gear ever, literally a car full and all goes to a wedding. All our shooters must have a second camera body, at least 3 lenses and reliable memory cards.

Do you shoot film?

No. Steve shot film for many years before moving to digital in 2004 and he will not go back. All our other collaborators have never shot film (too young 😉 lol) and we would not encourage such a pedestrian method. If you want film we are not for you sadly, but we do have contacts at the rest homes.

Do you have a photo booth?

No we have a better option and its free when you book us for the evenings events.

We have studio lights to obtain that booth look and our couples just make a backdrop, get some props and we do the rest. This gives you the same quality of capture as all your other wedding photos and are fully edited.

Will you cry at our wedding?

Poor Steve, he sheds a tear at virtually every wedding. Key times for us are when the father see’s his daughter for the first time, ceremony moments and often father daughter dances. Steve is working on the other team members to get in touch with their emotional sides, it makes for a way better connected photographer.

Why do you prefer to video the speeches?

You try remembering the people who spoke at a wedding let alone what they said. Sure we have captured some amazing moments in the past but times have changed. There is often so much emotion involved with a speech and its this, that only video can capture.

Technology has really come on to allow us to video the speeches with a simple light and a couple of cameras. If you have a DJ and are using a mic, we will just tap into their audio outs.

Do you have any other talents?

Oh yes, heaps 🙂

We can help with the dress tying-up, you will not ever see one dress incorrectly tied up with us, its all in the detail. We can tie the ribbons on the cars. Steve used to own a hair salon, so he’s a dab-hand with bridal hair if it starts falling out (proof below). We can all tie ties, I think! We can all put button hole flowers on perfectly with not a single pin showing, boom! Steve is quite the master cake maker too, not relevant sorry!

A photographer and hairdresser!
